Car Maintenance Tips - Keep the Cooling System in Top Shape

Posted February 10th 2015

Most people find it hard to maintain the cooling system of a car. Even though cooling system maintenance seems tricky, it is one of the easiest aspects of car maintenance. Keeping the car’s cooling system in top shape requires you to keep a few tips in mind. As long as you follow these tips, maintaining the cooling system should not be difficult at all.

Check Cooling System Hoses during Regular Car Maintenance

The most important aspect of keeping your cooling system in top shape is checking the hoses. The cooling system comprises of rubber hoses which supply water that has been cooled in the radiator to the engine. Similarly, there are other hoses which transmit hot water from the engine to the radiator so it can be cooled.

Over time, the hoses become hard and tend to crack. If a hose cracks, water starts leaking. This could cause your car to overheat. If a car overheats, it could inflict serious damage on the engine. This is why you should make sure the hoses are checked at every scheduled car maintenance visit.

Coolant Level and Anti-Freeze Ratio

Before driving off every day, check the level of coolant in your car’s radiator. Also check the antifreeze and water ratio. The ratio of antifreeze and water depends on the water your car is facing. If you wish, you can buy premixed antifreeze. If not, you should mix equal parts of antifreeze and water. If you see that the level of antifreeze is decreasing over time, it is best to have the cooling system checked. If this problem is ignored during regular car maintenance visits, it could result in a more serious issue.

Keep an Eye on the Engine Heat Level

While driving, keep an eye out for the heat level of the engine. The indicator should be towards the middle. This indicates the car is operating at a normal temperature. If the indicator shows a higher temperature, have your cooling system checked immediately.

If you want to keep your cooling system in top shape, be sure to follow these car maintenance tips.
